TMJ Jaw Pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the skull and the jawbone like how a sliding hinge behaves. There are two TMJs on a human’s body – one on each side of the jaw. TMJ jaw pain, meanwhile, is a condition that leads to temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMD causes the patient to feel pain in the joints and the muscles responsible for jaw movements. The jaw could also get locked and there could be a popping or clicking sound when the jaw is opened or closed. The pain and discomfort may last for a few days or weeks and go away on their own; for some, the symptoms could last for months, even years. If the pain or discomfort that you feel has been going for far too long or has gone to a degree that greatly affects your daily activities, you should immediately seek medical attention. And one effective treatment for TMD is chiropractic care, which we offer here at Vito Chiropractic Center.

Chiropractic Treatment for TMJ Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can be caused by a variety of factors and conditions. Among them are whiplash injury, arthritis, accidental slip or fall, chronic grinding or clenching of the teeth, and erosion of the shock-absorbing disk situated in the TMJ. Aside from the usual pain in the jaw area, other symptoms of TMD include:

  • Swelling of the sides of the face
  • Tenderness in the face or jaw joint areas
  • Difficulty opening the mouth wide
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Hearing problem
  • Toothache
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Pain in the upper shoulders

These symptoms are not always conclusive, however, since they could also be caused by other conditions. A health professional like a chiropractor should assess your condition to determine whether the symptoms you’re experiencing are related to TMD. If it is, indeed, TMJ jaw pain that has developed into TMD, our chiropractors could begin treatment with pain relief care.

We can start with gentle massages and stretching of the affected areas to ease the pain and discomfort of the patient. We would follow it up with corrective care, in which we would try to rehabilitate the TMJ to make the pain and discomfort go away. Finally, we would do maintenance care after the symptoms have gone away to ensure that the positive results that we have achieved will last long. With such an approach, we assure clients that the pain relief that they enjoy won’t be temporary but sustained.
