Whiplash

Whiplash can be caused by different events – car accident, sports injury, fall, or physical abuse. It involves violent back-and-forth movement of the neck, the result of which can be pain that’s either temporary or has lasting effects. During the event, the sheer force causes the neck tendons and muscles to stretch and tear, thus resulting in the characteristic pain. Among the common symptoms of a whiplash injury include dizziness, neck pain and stiffness, sleep disturbance, fatigue, headaches, and many others. The symptoms and effects can be short-lived or persist for years if their condition is left untreated.

People who figured in an accident and show symptoms of whiplash should immediately seek medical help. Some effects of whiplash can be particularly concerning, such as limited range of motion in the neck area, difficulty concentrating or memorizing, and depression. These symptoms could spiral out of control and lead to more serious physical and mental problems, so whiplash victims should seek urgent medical help following the incident.

Why Opt for Chiropractic Treatment?

The most common means of treating whiplash injuries is taking prescription medication such as anti-depressants or over-the-counter drugs such as pain relievers. Physicians also recommend muscle relaxants and numbing medicine to take the pain down to a tolerable level. Less-serious whiplash injuries could also be treated with a custom exercise regimen and physical therapy, while other doctors recommend a two-day rest and periodic application of hot or cold packs on the affected area as first-aid remedies for non-serious cases. However, when there is chronic pain that negatively affects a patient’s range of movement or when the patient experiences diminished cognitive abilities, a more serious and urgent approach is needed. Medical consultations are needed to flesh out the severity of the symptoms the patient is experiencing. Meanwhile, laboratory tests are advised for serious cases to determine the extent of damage to the neck and spinal areas.

If not addressed outright, whiplash symptoms could worsen to the point that the patient’s quality of life is severely compromised. In such situations, we recommend having chiropractic treatment as an excellent option. When dealing with whiplash injury, we perform manipulation techniques to alleviate pain and provide corrective effects to the neck and spine. Our chiropractors offer not just corrective care and pain relief, but also maintenance care to offer long-lasting benefits to patients with whiplash injuries. With chiropractic treatment, patients are not given a temporary escape from pain but lasting relief.
